Sweet corn harvest in the garden

today has been interesting to say the least...

Well, not much going on during the lazy hazy days of summer, but I decided I would try to shake up things some... so I went to Jake's and got the Mower, brought it back to the front of the barn and hooked up the sprayer. I added chemical and found out that the two I wanted to use will not work after adding the chemical and seeing it harden before my eyes... so yelp, started all over.. filled up the tank, went out on the road side and promptly turned over the sprayer, breaking the wand off of the hose... and getting it all over me leg... and shoes... but not to fear, I got it up right, walked about a half mile, found a piece of wire that would let me bend the hose and shut off the wand so I could finish spraying... and I went about a half mile and had a flat on the back of the tractor, since it was at Jake's I forgot to air up the back tire.. so it went flat or was flat when I started out, but I get off and on the tractor on the other side so I did not notice... it was low... so 60.00 dollars later, with a plug in it, i brought it to the house, unhooked the sprayer, put them in the barn and cleaned up washing off the chemical after about 4 hours wearing it... anyway... what a morning... and I am sure it will only get better this afternoon.. haha..

all things considered, not heart attack yet.. haha... My neighbor Bob Britton had his second attack last Tuesday and had another stint put in with 99% blockage to the one that was repaired... his first was in 2005 - same year as mine..

anyway.. Ann is home today so I need to keep busy to 'fool' the boss.. haha...

Lost Art of Fishing -
I'll be honest. I didn't have clue what noodling (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noodling) was until I read about it online - and after about a dozen co-workers told me I had no business doing it if I ever wanted to use all ten fingers again. Last week I finally went noodling, barehanded fishing that is, at Lake Thunderbird.
We watched our noodling guides go at it first. Out came a 25 pound flathead catfish. That was followed by a smaller bluefish. They may be smaller, but I quickly learned they carry a much more powerful punch, and bite. Only the flatheads are keepers during noodling, but you really don't know what your pulling out from underneath that flat rock in shallow waters until you get your hand on it; or it gets it's teeth into you.
Case in point, after a failing to capture a flathead which I had my hand on at one point, we moved to the next rock of choice, cornered the fish in it's once sacred little home. As instructed, I put my entire arm inside the fish-formed tunnel. Before I could see or feel anything, IT decided to reach out to me instead. Bluefish hate arms being stuck inside their houses without an invitation. They let you know that by biting down as hard as they can. I didn't lose any digits, but I did lose a little skin off my right hand and some nerve to boot.
But how awesome is it that, even though the fishing pole was invented during the ancient times in Egypt, China, Greece and Rome, that the art of noodling is stll around? Too bad everyone's fingers aren't because of it.

Jackson apologizes for 'crude' Obama remarks

CHICAGO, Illinois (CNN) -- The Rev. Jesse Jackson apologized Wednesday for "crude and hurtful" remarks he made about Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama after an interview with a Fox News correspondent.
The Rev. Jesse Jackson apologized to Sen. Obama's campaign Wednesday over "hurtful" remarks.

The remarks came Sunday as Jackson was talking to a fellow interviewee, United Health Group executive Dr. Reed V. Tuckson. An open microphone picked up Jackson whispering, "See, Barack's been talking down to black people ... I want to cut his nuts off."
Jackson told CNN's "Situation Room" that he didn't realize the microphone was on.
"It was very private," Jackson said, adding that if "any hurt or harm has been caused to his campaign, I apologize."
An Obama campaign spokesman, Bill Burton, said that the senator from Illinois "of course accepts Rev. Jackson's apology."
Jackson's son, Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. of Illinois -- co-chair of Obama's presidential campaign -- publicly blasted his father's comments Wednesday.
"I'm deeply outraged and disappointed in Rev. Jackson's reckless statements about Sen. Barack Obama," the younger Jackson said. "His divisive and demeaning comments about the presumptive Democratic nominee -- and I believe the next president of the United States -- contradict his inspiring and courageous career."
Jackson Jr. added that he'll "always love" his father. But, he said, "I thoroughly reject and repudiate his ugly rhetoric."
The elder Jackson repeated his apology in a news conference in Chicago a couple of hours before Fox News aired Sunday's remarks. He said he wanted to address the issue publicly before the cable network aired the comment, because "I know that they will further violate the context of it."

"I was in a conversation with a fellow guest on Sunday. He asked about Barack's speeches lately at the black churches. I said he comes down as speaking down to black people," Jackson said.
In a recent Father's Day speech at a black church, Obama took absent black fathers to task, saying, "We need them to realize that what makes you a man is not the ability to have a child -- it's the courage to raise one."
While Jackson didn't cite any particular comment, he told CNN that Obama's message to black voters must be broader and serve as more than a "moral challenge."
The black community is faced with high levels of unemployment, home foreclosures and violence, "so we have some real serious issues -- not just moral issues," he said.
However, Jackson said after finding out about the open microphone, he immediately contacted the Obama campaign to apologize.
Burton, Obama's spokesman, said the senator is quite familiar with the issues facing African-Americans and that "he will continue to speak out about our responsibilities to ourselves."
"As someone who grew up without a father in the home, Sen. Obama has spoken and written for many years about the issue of parental responsibility, including the importance of fathers participating in their children's lives," Burton said. "He also discusses our responsibility as a society to provide jobs, justice, and opportunity for all."
The Rev. Al Sharpton, president of the civil rights group National Action Network, said Jackson's remarks were "most unfortunate," adding he was happy that Jackson apologized.
"I hope people will remember the great work he's done in this country as one assesses this last incident," Sharpton said in a statement.
Sharpton said people "must be careful not to segregate Sen. Obama and impose some litmus test that is unfair and unproductive."
"We must be very clear that Sen. Obama ... is running for president for all Americans, not just African-Americans -- which is why most Americans have embraced his campaign," Sharpton said.

Jackson, whose Rainbow/PUSH Coalition is based in Chicago, has publicly endorsed Obama, most recently in a piece published Tuesday in the Chicago Sun-Times, and said he enjoys a close relationship with the Obama family.
The incident is the latest of several in which the issue of Obama's relationship with the African-American community has become a part of the campaign, raised either by opponents or by Obama's allies.
Nearly two weeks ago, Ralph Nader -- who is running his own presidential campaign as an independent -- accused Obama of attempting to "talk white" and appealing to "white guilt" in his quest for the White House.
"There's only one thing different about Barack Obama when it comes to being a Democratic presidential candidate. He's half African-American," Nader told Colorado's Rocky Mountain News in a June 26 story.
Obama is still bouncing back from the weeks-long controversy over his former minister, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, whose fiery sermons at Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ drew unwanted attention for the campaign. In the sermons, Wright suggested the U.S. government may be responsible for the spread of AIDS in the black community and equated some American wartime activities to terrorism.
Wright's sermons and his eccentric behavior at later public appearances became a major political headache for the Obama campaign, especially since Wright officiated the senator's wedding, baptized both of his children and was a spiritual adviser to his presidential campaign until he was asked to step down in March.
This week's remarks by Jackson were not the first time he criticized Obama. Last fall, he was critical of Obama's reaction to the severe charges filed against six black students in the beating of a white student in Jena, Louisiana, a racially charged case that sparked a national outcry.
Jackson accused Obama of "acting like he's white," according to a South Carolina newspaper that cited a speech by Jackson at the historically black Benedict College in Columbia.
"If I were a candidate, I'd be all over Jena," Jackson said, according to the The State newspaper. "Jena is a defining moment, just like Selma [Alabama] was a defining moment."
The newspaper reported Jackson later said he did not recall saying Obama is "acting like he's white," but he continued to criticize Obama and other presidential candidates for not bringing more attention to the issue.
During the Democratic primary race, Jackson also said Sen. John Edwards was the only candidate speaking to the issues of the black community. He later apologized.

Isn't it strange how the same old stuff just keeps rolling down hill... especially to those who are the first to fire the first shot.... hummm ... but yet I am sure Jesse will find a way to blame everyone else but himself. He has never ever in his "wonderful" life ever once stepped up to the plate and became a man.... and accepted fate. He was always too good...

and yet Jackson does raise the one point that is so true, he just missed out on who it was Barack Hussein Obama is talking down to... he talks down to everyone! He is a true air headed far left wing elitist who is so out of touch with reality and does not see things as they are, but rather as he wants them to be... there is a BIG difference in this... a man with wisdom would understand, a boy with a day dream of being President has no clue... One might keep in mind this election is not about the color of a man's skin or his ability to "speak" a good game, but rather the depth of a man's wisdom and the heart of his soul and the knowledge tempered with experience and tanacity that makes a great leader.... and age.. well if we go there... too young or too old... who would you want to trust you and your family's life too... a youngster or an old man... to lead you all safely through troubled times.. someone who knows, or someone who 'says' they know... while proving in action how inexperienced they are....??

The New York Times vs. Helms, Part 529,876 by Ann Coulter (more by this author) Posted 07/10/2008 ET Last Friday, on the Fourth of July, the great American patriot Jesse Helms passed away. John Adams and Thomas Jefferson also went to their great reward on Independence Day, so this is further proof of God. Helms is now the second great American patriot I've always wanted to meet and never will, at least in this lifetime. The only other one is the magnificent Reagan aide Lyn Nofziger. (Wikipedia quote: "I sometimes lie awake at night trying to think of something funny that Richard Nixon said.") After a week of hundreds of Helms obituaries -- one or two of which were not completely dishonest -- I will mention just a few items that were not addressed or given sufficient attention. The two most obsessively discussed topics among Senate staffers are: (1) Who is the stupidest senator? (Sen. Barbara Boxer pulled into the lead when Sen. Lincoln Chafee retired), and (2) which senators are beastly and which are wonderful to their staff? When I worked in the Senate in the '90s, the two senators famous for being absolute princes to work for were Sen. Helms and -- it pains me to tell you this, so you know it has to be true -- Sen. Teddy Kennedy. (He was so nice to his staffers, he frequently offered them rides home in his car after parties.) I never knew -- and you never knew, unless you read one of the two honest obituaries this past week -- that in 1962 Helms and his wife "Dot" adopted a 9-year-old orphan with cerebral palsy. They already had two daughters and Helms was 41 years old at the time. But it was Christmastime and they read about Charlie in a newspaper. He said all he wanted for Christmas was a mother and father. In the 1976 North Carolina Republican primary, Helms engineered Ronald Reagan's upset victory over Gerald Ford, the sitting president. That victory carried Reagan to the convention and made him the front-runner in 1980. The night Reagan won the 1980 presidential election, Helms famously uttered the beautiful words: "God has given America one more chance." In 1984, Helms' re-election campaign was the then-most expensive Senate race in history. His Democratic opponent, Gov. Jim Hunt, received campaign contributions from the usual dotty liberals: Barbra Streisand, Phil Donahue, Marlo Thomas, Paul Newman, Woody Allen -- all, no doubt, steeped in North Carolina politics. Shockingly, Hunt also received a donation from Arthur Sulzberger, publisher of the nonpartisan, totally objective, straight-down-the-middle New York Times. Which I guess explains the nasty obituary last week. Meanwhile, Helms received contributions mostly from America's two most dangerous fringe groups: housewives and businessmen. His few celebrity supporters included Gene Autry and Ellin Berlin, wife of composer Irving Berlin, the patriotic Jewish immigrant who wrote "White Christmas" and "God Bless America." Other Republicans loved to run in years when Helms was up for election because, like a Marine exposing himself to enemy fire to let his comrades escape, all the Hollywood money would be dedicated to defeating Helms. On election night 1984, a friend of mine was at a Republican victory party in Michigan when suddenly a group of Hasidim broke out in cheering and dancing. Was "Fiddler on the Roof" being made into a major motion picture? He looked up at the mammoth TV screen. It read: "Jesse Helms Wins North Carolina." Helms was viciously and falsely portrayed as a racist -- including in the totally objective New York Times obituary last week. In January 1963, a decade before Helms would run for office, he editorialized about Harvey Gantt, the first black student to be admitted to Clemson University in South Carolina. Helms praised Gantt to the skies, saying he had "stoutly resisted the pose of a conquering hero" and had "turned away from the liberal press and television networks which would glorify him." Gantt, Helms said, just wanted to be an architect and "Clemson is the only college in South Carolina that can teach him how to be one." Funny how that little tidbit didn't make the Times obituary. They must have cut it for "space." Helms was for integration; he was simply against "movements." He would later hire James Meredith, who was the first black to attend the University of Mississippi -- with the assistance of federal troops. By 1989, Meredith's views had come around to those of Helms, not the other way around. After years of reading and studying and attending law school at Columbia University, Meredith concluded that blacks had been better off when they worked for themselves and not for white liberals. (Having worked for white liberals myself, I couldn't agree more.) Meredith claimed Helms fired him as domestic policy adviser after a year because he was too right-wing for Helms. Which reminds me: I'll have to try to meet Meredith before the next Fourth of July. Liberals discount Helms' hiring of Meredith on the grounds that Meredith had wandered off the reservation. (Blacks are allowed to have only one set of political views.) It just shows you how stupid liberals are: Blacks don't live on reservations; Indians do. It's pretty much the same thing liberals are accusing B. Hussein Obama of right now. In its July 4 editorial, the Times harangued Obama for his diversions from the liberal line on Iraq, the domestic surveillance bill, capital punishment and guns. I believe the editorial was titled something like, "Get in Line, N-word." To paraphrase Dan Quayle, to be called a racist by these people is a badge of honor. Rest in peace, Jesse Helms: New York Times stock was recently lowered to a notch above junk bond status.

NEWSCASTLE, Okla. -- Thistles are a dilemma for many Oklahomans. It's a plant that has the potential to take over a field and there's one type of thistle that's actually illegal in our state.

NewsChannel 4's Marika Lorraine went to Newcastle where there's a field full of the weed.

The owner of the field is just glad his thistles aren't the illegal kind. It's a plant that's native to our state and even though it's not the illegal variety, it can still cause major headaches; leaving land practically useless.

"They're stickers, and they're thistles. They crowd out the grass, cattle won't eat them," says land owner, Butch Griffith.

Out of the 1100 acres Griffith owns, one spot poses the most problems when it comes to thistles.

"We spray them and knock them down first and they'll usually come back before the summer is over," Griffith says.

Not only are they a problem in the pasture, but neighbors complain the seeds spread and grow in their grass.

It's part of the reason some thistles are illegal to have on your property in Oklahoma.

"And with a fine of up to one $1000 per violation, per day, this field could be quite costly," Griffith explains.

Fortunately for this land owner, these particular plants are native wavy leaf thistles.

Though they are just as annoying and look very similar they don't spread as quickly as their foreign and illegal counterpart; the musk thistle.

"Very few species spread like the musk thistle," Jack Carson with the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture.

According to the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, all thistle infestations can harm livestock and wildlife by eliminating fields as a place to eat.

"It impacts the beauty of the state, it impacts the agricultural industry; it's a nuisance," Carson says.

Experts suggest treating tracts with herbicide and mowing.

"The time to deal with a thistle problem is when you first notice it, because it's only going to get worse if you don't treat it," Carson says.

But as Griffith's pasture proves, that's easier said than done.

The Department of Agriculture only investigates written complaints and will advise the owner on how to get rid of the weed before they fine them.

Perkins woman pleads guilty to arson

STILLWATER -- A guilty plea has been entered by a Perkins woman accused of trying to set fire to her mobile home with her granddaughter inside.

Jonna Rae Murrell, 37, was scheduled to go to trial on Tuesday on a charge of attempted first-degree arson. Instead, she pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of felony fourth-degree arson.

Murrell was jailed for about five months with bail set at $50,000. She was released on a personal recognizance bond after she entered a plea to the reduced charge last week.

Murrell agreed to a plea bargain that will have her receiving five years probation at her Aug. 18 sentencing before Special District Judge Phillip Corley, court records show.

Murrell was drunk at the time of the February incident in the Piney River Trailer Park west of Perkins, defense attorney Virginia Banks of Stillwater told the Tulsa World.

Murrell has a history of mental illness but was found competent to face an arson charge, court records show. She now is on medication, seems to be doing well, and has returned to live with her daughter and granddaughter, Banks said.

Murrell was accused of placing a 5-gallon gas can under her mobile home on Feb. 2 and lighting it while the trailer was occupied by her 8-month-old granddaughter.

State Fire Marshal's Agent Terry Smith testified at a preliminary hearing that he found no evidence of a fire or explosion at the home.

State law defines fourth-degree arson as the placing or distributing of any flammable, explosive or combustible material or substance in any building or property with intent to eventually willfully and maliciously set fire to or burn.
