Grandpa's Hands, from Randi Moffat

Grandpa's Hands
Grandpa, some ninety plus years, sat feebly on the patio bench.
He didn't move, just sat with his head down staring at his hands.
When I sat down beside him he didn't acknowledge my presence and
the longer I sat I wondered if he was OK.
Finally, not really wanting to disturb him but wanting to check
on him at the same time, I asked him if he was OK. He raised
his head and looked at me and smiled. Yes, I'm fine, thank you
for asking, he said in a clear strong voice.
I didn't mean to disturb you, grandpa, but you were just sitting
here staring at your hands and I wanted to make sure you were OK
I explained to him.
Have you ever looked at your hands he asked? I mean really
looked at your hands?
I slowly opened my hands and stared down at them. I turned them
over, palms up and then palms down. No, I guess I had never
really looked at my hands as I tried to figure out the point he
was making.
Grandpa smiled and related this story:
Stop and think for a moment about the hands you have, how they
have served you well throughout your years. These hands, though
wrinkled, shriveled and weak have been the tools I have used all
my life to reach out and grab and embrace life.
They braced and caught my fall when as a toddler I crashed upon
the floor. They put food in my mouth and clothes on my back. As
a child my mother taught me to fold them in prayer. They tied my
shoes and pulled on my boots.
They dried the tears of my children and caressed the love of my
life.
They held my rifle and wiped my tears when I went off to war.
They have been dirty, scraped and raw, swollen and bent.
They were uneasy and clumsy when I tried to hold my newborn son.
Decorated with my wedding band they showed the world that I was
married and loved someone special. They wrote the letters home
and trembled and shook when I buried my parents and spouse and
walked my daughter down the aisle.
Yet, they were strong and sure when I dug my buddy out of a
foxhole and lifted a plow off of my best friend's foot. They
have held children, consoled neighbors, and shook in fists of
anger when I didn't understand. They have covered my face,
combed my hair, and washed and cleansed the rest of my body.
They have been sticky and wet, bent and broken, dried and raw.
And to this day when not much of anything else of me works real
well these hands hold me up, lay me down, and again continue to
old in prayer. These hands are the mark of where I've been and
the ruggedness of my life.
But more importantly it will be these hands that God will reach
out and take when he leads me home. And with my hands He will
lift me to His side and there I will use these hands to touch the
face of Christ.
I will never look at my hands the same again. But I remember God
reached out and took my grandpa's hands and led him home. When
my hands are hurt or sore or when I stroke the face of my
children and wife I thank grandpa. I know he has been stroked
and caressed and held by the hands of God. I, too, want to touch
the face of God and feel his hands upon my face.

From Joanna and Clinton.......

1. There was a very gracious lady who was mailing an old
family Bible to her brother in another part of the country.
"Is there anything breakable in here?" asked the postal clerk.*

"Only the Ten Commandments." answered the lady.*
========

2. "Somebody has said there are only two kinds of people in
the world.
There are those who wake up in the morning and say, "Good
morning, Lord," and there are those who wake up in the morning
and say, "Good Lord, it's morning."*
========

3. A minister parked his car in a no-parking zone in a large
city because he was short of time and couldn't find a space
with a meter. Then he put a note under the windshield wiper
that read: "I have circled the block 10 times. If I don't park
here, I'll miss my appointment. Forgive us our trespasses."*

When he returned, he found a citation from a police officer
along with this note "I've circled this block for 10 years. If
I don't give you a ticket I'll lose my job. Lead us not into
temptation."*
========

4. There is the story of a pastor who got up one Sunday and
announced to his congregation: "I have good news and bad news.
The good news is, we have enough money to pay for our new
building program. The bad news is, it's still out there in
your pockets."*
========

5. While driving in Pennsylvania, a family caught up to an
Amish carriage. The owner of the carriage obviously had a
sense of humor, because attached to the back of the carriage
was a hand printed sign... *

"Energy efficient vehicle: Runs on oats and grass. Caution:
Do not step in exhaust."*
========

6. A Sunday School teacher began her lesson with a question,
Boys and girls, what do we know about God?" *

A hand shot up in the air. "He is an artist!" said the
kindergarten boy.*

"Really? How do you know?" the teacher asked.*

"You know - Our Father, who does art in Heaven... "*
========

7. A minister waited in line to have his car filled with gas
just before a long holiday weekend. The attendant worked
quickly, but there were many cars ahead of him. Finally, the
attendant motioned him toward a vacant pump. *

"Reverend," said the young man, "I'm so sorry about the
delay. It seems as if everyone waits until the last minute to
get ready for a long trip.*

The minister chuckled, "I know what you mean. It's the same
in my business."
========

8. People want the front of the bus,*
the back of the church, *
and the center of attention.*
========

9. A father was approached by his small son who told him
proudly, "I know what the Bible means!" *

His father smiled and replied, "What do you mean, you 'know'
what the Bible means?" *

The son replied, "I do know!"*

"Okay," said his father. "What does the Bible mean?"*

"That's easy, Daddy." the young boy replied excite dly, *"It
stands for 'Basic Information Before Leaving Earth.'"
========

10. Sunday after church, a Mom asked her very young daughter
what the lesson was about. The daughter answered, "Don't be
scared, you'll get your quilt."*

Needless to say, the Mom was perplexed. Later in the day, the
pastor stopped by for tea and the Mom asked him what that
morning's Sunday school lesson was about. *

He said "Be not afraid, thy comforter is coming."
========

11. The minister was preoccupied with thoughts of how he was
going to ask the congregation to come up with more money than
they were expecting for repairs to the church building.*

Therefore, he was annoyed to find that t he regular organist
was sick and a substitute had been brought in at the last
minute. The substitute wanted to know what to play.*

"Here's a copy of the service," he said impatiently. "But,
you'll have to think of something to play after I make the
announcement about the finances."*

During the service, the minister paused and said, "Brothers
and Sisters, we are in great difficulty; the roof repairs cost
twice as much as we expected and we need $4,000 more. Any of
you who can pledge $100 or more, please stand up."*

At that moment, the substitute organist played "The Star
Spangled Banner."*

And that is how the substitute became the regular organist!*

To get some humor out of life

SO LUCKY TO BE AMERICAN

SO LUCKY TO BE AMERICAN

by: Baxter Black
DVM

I am writing this column on my veranda. The heat of the day is dissipating. Shadows are growing longer in the canyon to the south. The bottoms of the clouds are turning pink and the mountains to the east of the valley are glowing purple. Cindy is bustling in the kitchen. I think I smell Teriyaki sauce. My 12-year old is being mauled by 5 little cow dog puppies. The horses are fed. The cows are fat. The quail are chuckling and dusk is waiting in the wings.
As I take a sip of my icy beverage and relax I remind myself of my New Year's resolution; to stop once a day and remind myself that this is as good as it gets. But as that thought sinks in, I become fully aware of how many have given so much so I could be right here. “Right here” for me is to be an American.

Lucky enough to be born in a country where I am free to worship God, free to better myself as best I'm able. Lucky enough to born in a time when the knowledge of human kind is expanding exponentially, in medicine, physics, transportation, chemistry, extending and improving all our lives.

Lucky to be born while prejudices are fading, poverty is constantly having to be redefined, and America's light continues to shine as a ray of hope for the less fortunate worldwide. But the reality of the debt I owe comes home to roost every day in the papers when I read the names of those soldiers killed in the war on terror.

Every one of them is directly responsible for the freedom I enjoy. They are each one part of a long line of Americans from all walks of life; soldiers, civilians, policemen, firemen, CIA, research scientists, inventors, ministers, teachers, legislators and parents who have sacrificed, toiled, sweated and believed in what America stands for and put their money where their mouth is. Whether it's carrying a gun, a stethoscope or flowers to the nursing home.

I owe George Washington, Bill Gates, Grandpa Tommy, Lewis & Clark, Cochise, Federico Peña, Thomas Edison, Uncle Paul, Madeline Albright, Donald Rumsfeld and Pastor Blair.

Two hundred and twenty-some odd years ago a group of citizens as different as Jefferson and Adams or Bush and Gore, conspired to declare our independence and invent a country.

They did just that, like none other on Earth. And that I got so lucky to be blessed to be born here is a miracle I do not take for granted.

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America.

Emma Kincade's auction tomorrow....

Some of you may remember the lady who helped Grandpa Shaklee when he managed Vincent Chevolet in Stillwater??? Anyway, her name was Emma Kincade in those days.. then she married Petty. They lived south on Western Street about a half mile south of 28th street on West side. They had horses, etc. Andy Kincade is their son. Perrin died some years back and Jake took feed to her for several years, till we quit.

Here is a link to the auction she is having tomorrow afternoon... saw the coach and thought of Phil and his horse Dan....

just wanted you to know.. a bit of history is in the making mode. End of an era...

This weekend...

Don't have a lot planned... have to go to Sooner Lake and east a bit on highway 15 to take pics of the auction there this morning. Then, work them this afternoon. I think we might keep Andrew and Madison tonight for Paul and Heather. They have baseball practice this evening.... and then tomorrow..

was wondering if anyone would want to meet us in OKC at either the Zoo or the Cowboy Hall of Fame at 9am, go through it, and then to the County Line for lunch and then home.... not a long deal, but something different... guess we could change that to the Kirkpatrick Planterium too if that was a better choice. Jake and Ann want to go to the Philbrook Museum in Tulsa sometime too ... so might have to plan that another time.. ahah..

If you are up to tomorrow and want to .. thats cool, and if not.. that's ok too... we could all use a day of rest....

oh .. i guess we could also meet at Jon and Randi's too....???? hahaha.... surprise them???? hehehehe.......

later all.. have a great day...

From Uncle Ivan... how cool

Stop telling God how big your storm is.
Instead tell your storm how big your GOD is!
In Phoenix, Arizona, a 26-year-old mother stared down at her 6 year old son, who was dying of terminal leukemia. Although her heart was filled with sadness, she also had a strong feeling of determination. Like any parent, she wanted her son to grow up and fulfill all his dreams. Now that was no longer possible..

The leukemia would see to that. But she still wanted her son's dreams to come true. She took her son's hand and asked, "Billy, did you ever think about what you wanted to be once you grew up? Did you ever dream and wish what you would do with your life?" Mommy, "I always wanted to be a fireman when I grew up." Mom smiled back and said, "Let's see if we can make your wish come true."

Later that day she went to her local fire department in Phoenix, Arizona, where she met Fireman Bob, who had a heart as big as Phoenix. She explained her son's final wish and asked if it might be possible to give her six-year-old son a ride around the block on a fire engine. Fireman Bob said, "Look, we can do better than that. If you'll have your son ready at seven o'clock Wednesday morning, we'll make him an honorary fireman for the whole day. He can come down to the fire station, eat with us, go out on ll the fire calls, the whole nine yards! And if you'll give us! his sizes, we'll get a real fire uniform for him, with a real fire hat-not a toy one-with the emblem of the Phoenix Fire Department on it, a yellow slicker like we wear and rubber boots. They're all manufactured right here in Phoenix, so we can get them fast."

Three days later Fireman Bob picked up Billy, dressed him in his fire uniform and escorted him from his hospital bed to the waiting hook and ladder truck. Billy got to sit on the back of the truck and help steer it back to the fire station. He was in heaven. There were three fire calls in Phoenix that day and Billy got to go out on all three calls. He rode in the different fire engines, the paramedic's van, and even the fire chief's car. He was also videotaped for the local news program. Having his dream come true, with all the love and attention that was lavished upon him, so deeply touched Billy that he lived three months longer than any doctor thought possible.

One night all of his vital signs began to drop dramatically and the head nurse, who believed in the hospice concept that no one should die alone, began to call the family members to the hospital. Then she remembered the day Billy had spent as a fireman, so she called the Fire Chief and asked if it would be possible to send a fireman in uniform to the hospital to be with Billy as he made his transition.

The chief replied, "We can do better than that. We'll be there in five minutes. Will you please do me a favor? When you hear the sirens screaming and see the lights flashing, will you announce over the PA system that there is not a fire? It's just the fire department coming to see one of its finest members one more time.

And will you open the window to his room? About five minutes later a hook and ladder truck arrived at the hospital and extended its ladder up to Billy's third floor open window 16 firefighters climbed up the ladder into Billy's room.

With his mother's permission, they hugged him and held him and told him how much they loved him. With his dying breath, Billy looked up at the fire chief and said, "Chief, am I really a fireman now?"

"Billy, you are, and the Head Chief, Jesus, is holding your hand," the chief said. With those words, Billy smiled and said, "I know, He's been holding my hand all day, and the angels have been singing.." He closed his eyes one last time.
