Dear Stan and Ann,

Thank a Veteran TodayToday, our nation will honor the men and women who have worn the uniforms of our Armed Forces with ceremonies across the United States. This Veterans Day, please join me and Oklahomans from across the state in honoring those who have bravely served our nation.

For generations, men and women have given their lives at home and in lands across the globe in defense of our freedom. Our military serves as an example of the values upon which our country was founded:  service to a cause greater than self.

The blessings of freedom and liberty that we hold dear are secured each day by the military men and women who protect us at home and abroad. Each of us owes a debt of gratitude to the generations of veterans who have kept this country free and safe and I ask that you join me in honoring their service.

This Veterans Day, let us also pay respect to the memories of those who have given their lives in service to our country. We can never repay that debt, but can promise to honor them through remembering their ultimate sacrifice.

Again, I hope you will join me in sending encouragement and support to our veterans and military families for all their service and sacrifice.

God bless America!

Monica Taylor releases new CD

By Cindy Sheets
Contributing Writer

Local Red Dirt songster Monica Taylor once again brings her distinctive sweet voice and home style songs to a growing audience with the release of her new CD, “Cotton Shirt.”
Cotton Shirt, released Thursday, Nov. 5, features 11 tracks penned and performed by Taylor and other Red Dirt artists, including Randy Pease, Greg Jacobs, and former partner Patrick Williams.
Taylor said she was thrilled to be able to include “The Price of Love” on the CD. Taylor performs the song as a duet with Stillwater favorite Jimmy LaFave, who wrote it.
“It’s one of my all-time favorite Jimmy songs,” Taylor said. “He hadn’t played it for years, and he re-wrote the last verse so I could sing it. It’s the one song on the CD that was unrehearsed.
“[The CD] is a fine recording done in Tulsa with the best musicians and dear friends, and down in Austin at Jimmy LaFave’s studio, Cedar Creek. This is where The Dixie Chicks recorded‘ Home,’ where Shawn Colvin has recorded just about everything. The list is pretty amazing.”
Taylor said Cotton Shirt includes a couple other songs that audiences outside of Oklahoma will recognize – “Young Mother” and “Hello, Goodbye, I’m Gone.”
She performed those two melodies on “A Prairie Home Companion’s” Oct. 25 show last year. Garrison Keillor’s well-known NPR radio show visited Tulsa for a performance at the Performing Arts Center.
Taylor said she got an exciting telephone call from Keillor, who told her he had listened to her last CD, “Cimarron Valley Girl.” He asked her, “Can you come to Tulsa tonight for a little practice with me for the show at the PAC that airs live tomorrow?”
And that was how she found herself performing in The Prairie Home Companion show before a seated audience of 2,500 and a much larger radio audience.
“I sang ‘Young Mother,’ which I wrote about the famous Dorothea Lange Dust Bowl-era photo titled, “The Migrant Mother.’
Taylor said she was rehearsing some of her other songs prior to the show, trying to decide what she’d like to perform.
“Garrison said, ‘You know, I just get the feeling there’s something new you’d been wanting to play for me.’”
She then played “Hello, Goodbye, I’m Gone.”
“He loved it,” she said. “He told the audience, ‘This is a sweet, sad song that Monica just played for me backstage.’”
“I sold so many CDs – hundreds – after that show... made so many new fans,” Taylor recalls. “I have now presold many Cotton Shirt CDs because of his listeners... and my own good fans.
“I’m so thankful for that opportunity.”
Though she had already planned to record a new CD, Cotton Shirt came about much sooner, primarily because of interest derived from Prairie Home Companion.
Keillor also included two more of Taylor’s performances in Prairie Home’s “Favorites of 2008” show.
Taylor is now busily sending out Cotton Shirt CDs by the bushel. She said she has already had orders from across the nation, and is intrigued by all those far-reaching addresses.
She also has several release parties planned. They’ll begin in December after she returns from a musical tour of the Pacific Northwest, where she’ll help Stillwater native Craig Dermer and his wife celebrate their birthdays with a concert on Nov. 15.
“There’s a lot of Okies who have moved out there,” she said. “Craig Dermer’s band, the Dust Bowl Refugees, will back me up on Saturday. Isn’t that a great name for a band out in Oregon that includes at least two or three transplanted Okies?”
Taylor has a series of release parties and performances lined up when she returns to Oklahoma, but this Saturday, Nov. 7, at 10 a.m. you can catch her at the Garden Diva Sculpture Co. Annual Open House in Tulsa, and on Sunday, Nov. 8, she’ll perform for the Woody Guthrie Tribute, at the Blue Door in Oklahoma City.
You can buy Taylor’s CDs locally at Sasser Antiques in Perkins, and Hastings, Daddy O’s, and Hideaway in Stillwater. And online at www.monic ataylormusic.com

Owens Breaks 4 Campaign Promises in first hour in Congress
Northern NY News
Written by Nathan Barker
GOUVERNEUR, NY - Congressman-elect Bill Owens was sworn in at noon today.
Owens indicated in a press release released shortly afterwards that he was now in favor of the the "Affordable Healthcare for America Act" bill in direct contrast to his earlier position during the election campaign.
According to Politico.com, Mr. Owens assured voters that he felt the public option had no place in the health care reform bill.  Contrary to that position, Mr. Owens now indicates that he intends to vote in favor of the bill even though it now contains a public option.
UPDATED: A spokesman for Congressman Owens indicated correctly that Mr. Owens had recanted his solid position against public option later in the campaign, clarifying that he did not wish public option to be a 'litmus test' for the Health Reform bill and that on Oct. 30th, several days prior to the election, in a debate had stated that he generally supported the public option as it was now written (at that time.)
Mr. Owens also indicated during his campaign that he was firmly opposed to cutting Medicare benefits, taxing health care benefits, and increased taxes on the middle class in any way as you can see clearly in the screenshot below, taken directly from Mr. Owens' campaign website.

Click for larger image Click to enlarge image
The House Health reform bill contains sections that cut Medicare benefits, tax existing health care benefits, and increases taxes on the middle class, yet Mr. Owens stated today that he will now vote in favor of those things contrary to what he had promised the voters of NY's 23rd Congressional District that he would vote against.
Mr. Owens indicated in his press release today that "This legislation will reform the insurance industry and provide increased access to affordable healthcare without taxing healthcare benefits, cutting Medicare benefits or raising taxes on the middle class, and that is exactly the direction we need to go."
When The Gouverneur Times attempted to contact Mr. Owens to clarify this information, we received no direct response to our phone or email inquiries.  Both FactCheck.org and the Congressional Budget Office agree that HR 3962 contains potentially hundreds of billions of dollars in planned cuts to Medicare, yet Mr. Owens indicates that he supports this legislation and says that it does not cut Medicare benefits.  Either Mr. Owens has been snowed or the public is about to be.

HR 3962 also includes a range of various taxes on middle-class families as well as language to repeal tax relief already in place.  Has Congressman Owens blindly followed Ms. Pelosi's rhetoric in believing that the end to a tax cut is not the same thing as an increase in taxes or is he hedging his bet with very carefully chosen words?
HR 3962 now also contains language that allows illegal immigrants to be covered under the legislation.  When The Gouverneur Times attempted to contact Mr. Owens for clarification of this language, we received no response other than the press release heretofore mentioned.  Specifically, we asked if illegal immigrants would be forced to purchase healthcare insurance as citizens will be and whether or not they would be forced to do so at standard rates or if they would qualify for the public option subsidy.
In a speech made to Congress a short time ago, President Obama had stated that the bill would not contain support for illegal immigrants - a statement for which he was called a "liar" by Rep. Joe Wilson.  Rep. Wilson was severely chastised for his comment at the time though it would now seem to be true.
The mixed-up mess that was the 23rd Congressional District Special Election was a close race between Democrat Bill Owens and Conservative Doug Hoffman.  Many feel that it was unlikely Mr. Owens would have won those crucial few thousand votes if the voting public was aware of his intent with regard to the Health Care bill.  The majority of residents in this district do not support the Health Reform bill as it is now written and many feel like they've become victims of a fraud perpetrated by their chosen candidate.
Breaking campaign promises is not unusual for politicians... it's a cliche.  This is almost certainly a record though.  Mr. Owens broke no less than 4 promises in his first 24 hours in office.

what would happen if someone elected to public office actually kept their word.. to me, that would indeed be front page news

Obama Gives Shout Out to 'Congressional Medal of Honor Winner' Who Isn't

Photo of Mike Bates.

The Washington Post this afternoon reported "President Obama delivers remarks on Ft. Hood shooting at end of tribal leaders conference." The transcript begins:
SPEAKER: PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA
[*] OBAMA: Please, everybody, have a seat. Let me first of all just thank Ken and the entire Department of the Interior staff for organizing just an extraordinary conference.
I want to thank my Cabinet members and senior administration officials who participated today. I hear that Dr. Joe Medicine Crow (ph) was around, and so I want to give a shout out to that Congressional Medal of Honor winner. It's good to see you.
Ah, the dangers of giving shout outs without a teleprompter.  Crow is not a Medal of Honor recipient.  As noted by the Congressional Medal of Honor Society:
The Medal of Honor is the highest award for valor in action against an enemy force which can be bestowed upon an individual serving in the Armed Services of the United States. Generally presented to its recipient by the President of the United States of America in the name of Congress, it is often called the Congressional Medal of Honor.
Crow's name is not included on the Society's Medal of Honor recipient list.  He was, however, awarded the Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor, in August.
Obama, often described as "cerebral" by the mainstream media, should know the difference between the Medal of Honor and the Medal of Freedom, especially since he personally awarded the latter to Crow.  Don't expect his blunder to receive wide coverage.  It's not something he can blame George Bush for.

Pray Pray Pray.... That those nuts in DC get some wisdom...

might be time to get on our knees and as God to provide some wisdom and backbone to vote NO on this stupid spending health care vote....

Obama's Frightening Insensitivity Following Shooting

Obama's Frightening Insensitivity Following Shooting
A bad week for Democrats compounded by an awful moment for Barack Obama.
By ROBERT A. GEORGE
Updated 2:56 PM CST, Fri, Nov 6, 2009

President Obama didn't wait long after Tuesday's devastating elections to give critics another reason to question his leadership, but this time the subject matter was more grim than a pair of governorships.

After news broke out of the shooting at the Fort Hood Army post in Texas, the nation watched in horror as the toll of dead and injured climbed. The White House was notified immediately and by late afternoon, word went out that the president would speak about the incident prior to a previously scheduled appearance. At about 5 p.m., cable stations went to the president. The situation called for not only his trademark eloquence, but also grace and perspective.
But instead of a somber chief executive offering reassuring words and expressions of sympathy and compassion, viewers saw a wildly disconnected and inappropriately light president making introductory remarks. At the event, a Tribal Nations Conference hosted by the Department of Interior's Bureau of Indian affairs, the president thanked various staffers and offered a "shout-out" to "Dr. Joe Medicine Crow -- that Congressional Medal of Honor winner."  Three minutes in, the president spoke about the shooting, in measured and appropriate terms. Who is advising him?

Anyone at home aware of the major news story of the previous hours had to have been stunned. An incident like this requires a scrapping of the early light banter. The president should apologize for the tone of his remarks, explain what has happened, express sympathy for those slain and appeal for calm and patience until all the facts are in. That's the least that should occur.

Indeed, an argument could be made that Obama should have canceled the Indian event, out of respect for people having been murdered at an Army post a few hours before. That would have prevented any sort of jarring emotional switch at the event.

Did the president's team not realize what sort of image they were presenting to the country at this moment? The disconnect between what Americans at home knew had been going on -- and the initial words coming out of their president's mouth was jolting, if not disturbing.

It must have been disappointing for many politically aware Democrats, still reeling from the election two days before. The New Jersey gubernatorial vote had already demonstrated that the president and his political team couldn't produce a winning outcome in a state very friendly to Democrats (and where the president won by 15 points one year ago). And now this? Congressional Democrats must wonder if a White House that has burdened them with a too-heavy policy agenda over the last year has a strong enough political operation to help push that agenda through.

If the president's communications apparatus can't inform -- and protect -- their boss during tense moments when the country needs to see a focused commander-in-chief and a compassionate head of state, it has disastrous consequences for that president's party and supporters.

All the president's men (and women) fell down on the job Thursday.  And Democrats across the country have real reason to panic.

Pelosi Breaks Pledge to Put Final Health Care Bill Online for 72 Hours Before Vote Speaker and Chief Liar Nancy Pelosi's office tells THE WEEKLY STANDARD that the speaker, due to her incompetency coupled with not being able to read nor write, will not allow the final language of the health care to be posted online for 72 hours before bringing the bill to a vote on the House floor, despite her September 24 statement that she was "absolutely" committed to doing so.

GOP offers cheaper approach to health reform

November 6, 2009

Republicans are offering an alternative health reform plan that should at least be debated before Congress rushes to turn the nation's health care system inside out.

But that likely won't happen. The House is poised to vote today or tomorrow on a health care package that, despite fierce objections from moderates and conservatives who fear it will result in higher taxes, bigger deficits and lesser coverage for most Americans, still contains most of the egregious elements of the initial proposal.

Republicans recognize that they have to do more than say "no" to the Democratic ideas. So they've put together a bill, with the help of Rep. Dave Camp, R-Midland, containing less costly and disruptive reforms.

The ideas are solid. Unfortunately, they come too late to have much influence on a bill that almost certainly will be passed in the House with few or no GOP votes. But perhaps Republicans can use the plan to force a more responsible compromise in the Senate.

The GOP bill is less ambitious than the plan being rammed through by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, taking an incremental approach to restructuring the system.

It uses market-based principles and does not include government subsidies or a public option.

But it would trim costs through strict limits on medical malpractice lawsuits, expanding health savings accounts, allowing consumers to buy insurance from out-of-state companies, providing tax breaks for insurance purchases, making it easier for small businesses to offer their employees insurance and breaking down barriers to coverage for the most hard-to-insure Americans.

While the proposal should increase the number of insured, it does not provide coverage for everyone. Tax deductions and health savings accounts aren't much use to those with no or very low income.

But it is far cheaper than the Democratic proposal, whose cost has soared to $1.3 trillion during the next decade; it won't add to the federal budget deficit and it does not require a massive new government bureaucracy to administer.

It fulfills many of the promises made by President Barack Obama -- it aggressively controls costs, it guarantees Americans can keep their existing plans, and it increases competition in the insurance industry -- far better than the Pelosi bill. The GOP plan deals strictly with cost and access and avoids the distractive intrusions into personal health care choices contained in the Democratic package.

The idea of enacting reform on a smaller scale and at a more deliberate pace ought to have some appeal to a Congress that has been inundated by concerns from constituents worried that the Democratic proposal will radically change the system, and not for the better.

Republicans are doing what a responsible opposition party should do -- offering an alternative that reflects their values and is a practical solution to an issue that has grown far too divisive.

Happy birthday Phillip......

This one bill affects our entire family in one way or the other.. even the young ones will grow old and be thrown out like we are going to be.. so think about this...

November 5th, 2009

Dear Liberty Activist,
Today, thousands of opponents of ObamaCare will be gathering on the steps of the nation's Capitol at Noon, as they go to tell Congress not to vote for HR 3962. You should be able to watch the broadcast of the rally at cspan.org.
If you can, join them in person, but if not, why not give them a call and send a few faxes their way?
To assist you, here's a few important facts that were sent my way about the bill:
In order to assist people seeking to read and review the health "reform" legislation (H.R. 3962) introduced by House Democrats, the Republican Conference has compiled a list of important page numbers and provisions in the 1,990-page "Affordable Health Care for America Act:"

Page 94—Section 202(c) prohibits the sale of private individual health insurance policies, beginning in 2013, forcing individuals to purchase coverage through the federal government

Page 110—Section 222(e) requires the use of federal dollars to fund abortions through the government-run health plan—and, if the Hyde Amendment were ever not renewed, would require the plan to fund elective abortions

Page 111—Section 223 establishes a new board of federal bureaucrats (the "Health Benefits Advisory Committee") to dictate the health plans that all individuals must purchase—and would likely require all Americans to subsidize and purchase plans that cover any abortion

Page 211—Section 321 establishes a new government-run health plan that, according to non-partisan actuaries at the Lewin Group, would cause as many as 114 million Americans to lose their existing coverage  Page 225—Section 330 permits—but does not require—Members of Congress to enroll in government-run health care

Page 255—Section 345 includes language requiring verification of income for individuals wishing to receive federal health care subsidies under the bill—while the bill includes a requirement for applicants to verify their citizenship, it does not include a similar requirement to verify applicants' identity, thus encouraging identity fraud for undocumented immigrants and others wishing to receive taxpayer-subsidized health benefits

Page 297—Section 501 imposes a 2.5 percent tax on all individuals who do not purchase "bureaucrat-approved" health insurance—the tax would apply on individuals with incomes under $250,000, thus breaking a central promise of then-Senator Obama's presidential campaign

Page 313—Section 512 imposes an 8 percent "tax on jobs" for firms that cannot afford to purchase "bureaucrat-approved" health coverage; according to an analysis by Harvard Professor Kate Baicker, such a tax would place millions "at substantial risk of unemployment"—Uwith minority workers losing their jobs at twice the rate of their white counterparts

Page 336—Section 551 imposes additional job-killing taxes, in the form of a half-trillion dollar "surcharge," more than half of which will hit small businesses; according to a model developed by President Obama's senior economic advisor, such taxes could cost up to 5.5 million jobs

Page 520—Section 1161 cuts more than $150 billion from Medicare Advantage plans, potentially jeopardizing millions of seniors' existing coverage

Page 733—Section 1401 establishes a new Center for Comparative Effectiveness Research; the bill includes no provisions preventing the government-run health plan from using such research to deny access to life-saving treatments on cost grounds, similar to Britain's National Health Service, which denies patient treatments costing more than £35,000

Page 1174—Section 1802(b) includes provisions entitled "TAXES ON CERTAIN INSURANCE POLICIES" to fund comparative effectiveness research, breaking Speaker Pelosi's promise that "UWe will not be taxing [health] benefits in any bill that passes the HouseU," and the President's promise not to raise taxes on families with incomes under $250,000

These are the Democrats who MUST be called every day from now until the vote, which may be as early as Saturday now. Here's the Target 92 list on the House side to all vulnerable and Blue Dog Democrats.  Blue Dogs are in blue. Here's the .xls and .pdf versions.  Of note, the first 40 on the list are the Blue Dogs that signed the "deficit-neutral" letter mentioned above.  Everything you need to email their staff, write letters, make phone calls and send faxes, both to their district and Capitol Hill offices.

I am calling my bank... I want obama math applied to my bank account...

reported by Bob Varney on Fox News...

Bob Mitchell was hired with stimulus funds in Califorina...

He in turn hired 5 more with stimulus funds to count fish... so a total of six men were hired with stimulus funds.... and they worked two (2) weeks...  80 hours each counting fish. The stimulus report was turned in with above information... to government bureaucrats...   who in turn marked thru the 6 jobs created and took the number of hours worked per worker... 80 times the number of men hired... 6...  and then wrote in the report that this one deal was responsible for, you guessed it right if you guessed.....

480 jobs hired with stimulus money...  480 NEW jobs created... and this is only one example.. .it is real and documented...  as fact...

and we hired this idiot Obama to be our CEO... our President... what a disgrace he is...

even grade school kids understand... 6 is 6...     basic math, don't care what system one uses... it is still 6.....

He has to be thrown out ...  we have to get someone up there who can read, write and understand math...

is that really asking toooooo much.. prehaps listening out to be required too...

just thinkin'.

Woman calls 911 to report herself as drunk driver

Woman calls 911 to report herself as drunk driver
NEILSVILLE, Wis. — The call came into the 911 dispatcher: "I don't want to hurt anybody. I'm drunk." And with that, Mary Strey, 49, of Granton, reported herself as a drunken driver about three miles northeast of Neilsville in central Wisconsin.
Clark County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Jim Backus said Monday that Strey's call on Oct. 24 led deputies to cite her for misdemeanor drunken driving with a blood-alcohol level double the legal limit to drive. She makes her first court appearance Dec. 10.
Backus said drunken drivers reporting themselves is rare.
In the 911 call, Strey said she wanted to report a drunken driver and the dispatcher asked if she was behind the suspect vehicle. "I am them," Strey said. She then followed the dispatcher's advice to pull over and turn on her flashers, telling him she had been "drinking all night long."
It was unclear if Strey has hired an attorney yet.

Wonder if

I wonder if the passing storm in all it's grander and noise, is Mother Nature refreshing the earth, or it's God's way of celebrating Missy's Birthday, or the idiots in Washington getting ready to jam the health care we don't want or need and can not pay for down our throats... just wondering which... it might be... heck, it might even be our children and their children and children's future leaving them before they are born!

I prayed this just now ...
Morning Lord,
You know, You and I have had many trials and many adjustments in our lifetime together. Amazingly, it seems you have blessed me way beyond what I have deserved, let alone wanted. I do believe every request was met with an answer as fast as I dialed it in. I know I have not been faithful, nor have I ever come close to living up to your expectations and the way you love me back sometimes just blows me away. Thank you for all the many gifts and those yet to come our way.
And as you might imagine, when we get together I am either asking or thanking You for all you do. So in that vein...
Father, you seem to always be there when things are going great or need fixin' so I was just thinkin' God, if you don't mind, I sure would love to see each member of congress who keeps voting to spend OUR money needlessly on unwanted healthcare, bail outs, etc  while not supporting our troops with money and men,  and one of the dumbest President's I have ever seen in my 62 years, get beat in the next election. Just thinkin' Lord... If you need my help, please show me how. The United States cannot afford this idiot, and his band of crazys, and the way things are going, he and they probably will make it against the law for us to pray to You as well, shucks, it might not be legal to believe in You either, (seems he wants to be you) so sneakin' in the one last request...  thanks Lord for the many blessing you give us daily, just don't know how many more we need from Washington, if you get my drift.. You are still my King of Kings and Lord of Lords, no matter what Obama and the nuts say...
Amen... amen.

Grandpa and Grandma Moffat

From Allen Jesson... Poetry online friend from UK... comes this wonderful poem.

Hi,

I had an unusual request from a client the other week and I thought
I'd share it with you. Basically, the client had had a very tough
life and wanted me to write a poem, as if from God, to the client.

For obvious reasons, the client's identity will remain anonymous,
but the message that the gift contains is a strong one.

So, if you're having a bad day, or are feeling a little sorry for
yourself, or looking for a little inspiration, then please read on..

Within

Hello, can you hear me?
Yes, I'm sorry, of course you can.
So, I'd like to begin with an apology,
it appears yours has been one tough plan.

I'm sorry, but it really had to be that way,
because everyone has my greatness within,
and I needed to bring out the best in you and
to all explain that, where on Earth can I begin?

I suppose I should start with your father,
he was a tragic case, for me, truly, a lost cause,
you see, some never rise to the challenges I set,
some never get to see my final round of applause.

So, don't take to heart his inconsiderate actions,
he had his demons who in the end, won his day,
and there is NOTHING you could have done to change it,
I repeat; nothing you could do, nothing you could say.

To be honest, your mother was really no better, so,
I gave you the very toughest start on planet Earth,
you see, I wanted to explore your character, yes,
I wanted to see your true and honest worth.

Right now, it may seem like a cruel and callous trick,
but trust me, you will see the logic at the very end,
because you learned early to find the power within, yes,
at the end of the day, "within" is your only trusted friend.

But your 'within' has attracted the worst of thoughts,
I understand and yes, you do really have every excuse,
because from an early age, even in my trusted church,
you have suffered, the very worse kind of tragic abuse.

So, those suicidal thoughts are really quite natural,
but please hear me, let them in and then let them go,
because you have so much to look forward to, yes,
your future will one day be golden and yes, I know.

At the moment, I have had to de-clutter your life,
so, no job, the wheelchair, the battle for what's right,
and you're losing all those around you, your loved ones,
so, all you're left with is your 'within', your Almighty might.

Look, if you don't believe me, please read your Bible,
and look at the struggles I have placed in front of many,
Acts 14:22 tells you how to enter the kingdom of God, so,
if you're looking for sympathy, I'm sorry, I don't have any.

Because just as the butterfly has to break the cocoon,
you humans have to break the shackles of your mind,
go on, start exploring, it's a big Universe out there, look!
Look at the stars, contemplate, go and see what you find.

Of course, you will have companions on your journey,
but to be honest, they have been with you, all along,
and if you listen very carefully to your within, well,
you will hear angels and more in every blackbird's song.

My friend, there is hope. You have me. You have Within,
and I can't think of a river that has a mightier course,
I love you. You are not alone. I am within. I am your within.
Go on, see the light and joy in every day. Go on, feel the force.

Crossroads Mall, OKC... now owned by you and I, so let's move in??

OKLAHOMA CITY (Reuters) - A $29 billion trail from the Federal Reserve's bailout of Wall Street investment bank Bear Stearns ends in a partially deserted shopping center on a bleak spot on the south side of Oklahoma City.
The Fed now owns the Crossroads Mall, a sprawling shopping complex at the junction of Interstate highways 244 and 35, complete with an oil well pumping crude in the parking lot -- except the Fed does not own the mineral rights.
The Fed finds itself in the unusual situation of being an Oklahoma City landlord after it lent JPMorgan Chase $29 billion to buy Bear Stearns last year.
That money was secured by a portfolio of Bear assets. Crossroads Mall is the only bricks and mortar acquired through bailout. The remaining billions are tied up in invisible securities spread across hundreds, if not thousands, of properties.

The Grating Communicator
by  Ann Coulter
10/21/2009

The Obama administration has attacked Fox News in order to prevent government corruption stories broken on Fox from bleeding into the other media, which are all-consumed with daily updates on Levi Johnston's Playgirl spread and Carrie Prejean's breast implants.

That's understandable. But I think the administration should have picked someone other than David Axelrod to deliver the claim that Fox News is "not really news," inasmuch as Axelrod was behind the leak of scurrilous allegations in Jack Ryan's sealed divorce papers when he was running for a Senate seat against Obama. Talk about vicious personal gossip.

Now that Fox has been branded an untouchable, the teacher's-pet media are jubilant.

In Newsweek, Jacob Weisberg wrote a column saying liberals should refuse to appear on Fox News, pointedly concluding, "And no, I don't want to come on 'The O'Reilly Factor' to discuss it." Considering that Weisberg is a 107-pound weasel with a speech impediment, this is on the order of Weisberg's announcing that he's not interested in appearing in the next "Ocean's Eleven" movie with George Clooney.

The strangest thing about all the invective against Fox is that it is happening in a world that contains MSNBC. At least Fox News primetime hosts, and many of their guests, know something about politics. MSNBC's primetime lineup presents an array of people who sound like earnest college kids who just walked up to a Common Cause table, and the sum-total of what they know about politics is what they read in the brochures.

In the past week, both Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann have rolled out the Willie Horton ad, claiming that it marked the beginning of vicious personal attacks in politics, as opposed to what it was: The most devastatingly relevant campaign commercial in all of American history.

You can always astonish college kids by telling them the true story of Willie Horton. Among the jaw-dropping facts are:

-- In the '80s, the Massachusetts Supreme Court ruled that a prison furlough policy had to be extended to convicted murderers, who were ineligible for parole.

-- Even the Massachusetts Legislature, which contained about three Republicans, realized this was insane, and quickly passed a bill excluding first-degree murderers from the weekend furlough program. But in a desperate bid for the ACLU's Brain-Dead Liberal of the Year Award, Gov. Michael Dukakis vetoed the bill.

-- Horton, who was later released under this program, was in prison for carving up a teenager at a gas station and then stuffing his body into a garbage can. (He had already been convicted of attempted murder in South Carolina -- through no fault of his own, the victim survived.)

-- Even after Horton used his Dukakis-granted furlough to rape and torture a Maryland couple in their home for 12 straight hours, the Greek homunculus issued a statement reaffirming his strong support for furloughing murderers.

-- The Bush campaign commercial about Dukakis' furlough program never showed a picture of Horton. In fact, the actors playing "criminals" passing through a revolving door in the ad were all white.

-- Voters considered it relevant that a candidate for president was so beholden to the ACLU that he backed an idiotic furlough program that released first-degree murderers.

Every informed student of the 1988 campaign knows that the Bush ad didn't show Horton's picture. And yet in Keith's discussion of Bush's allegedly vile, racist use of Willie Horton, he used a phony version of the ad, doctored to include a photo of Horton.

I don't blame Keith personally for this blatant distortion: He gets all his research material from Markos Moulitsas and other left-wing bloggers, so he can't be held responsible for the content of his show. Keith's principal contribution to the program is his nightly display of self-congratulation and pomposity.

Remember, Keith, like his MSNBC colleague Contessa Brewer, majored in "communications" in college, not a research-related field, such as political science. In his coursework, he learned such skills as: Dramatically Turning to Camera, Hysterical Self-Righteousness, Pausing Portentously and Gravely Demanding Apologies/Resignations From Various Public Figures.

Given this background, it's understandable that Keith will make errors. As viewers witnessed recently, he can't even pronounce the name of prominent American economist and philosopher, Thomas Sowell. (Although he did spend three weeks at a Berlitz course in Arabic honing his pronunciation of "Abu Ghraib" to razor-sharp prissiness.)

The bloggers and Keith bring different skill sets to the game. They provide the tendentious half-truths, phony opinion polls and spurious social science, while Keith provides his booming baritone, gigantic "Guys and Dolls" suits and gift for ridiculous, fustian grandiloquence. Keith is far better equipped than, say, the pint-sized, girly-voiced, Frito Bandito-accented Markos Moulitsas to deliver the party line.

But here's the fly in the ointment: Keith has once again been victimized by left-wing blogs into thinking that the 1988 Bush ad showed Willie Horton's picture, when in fact, Horton's race was deliberately scrubbed from the ad.
